چکیده

A transient, three-dimensional model for thermal transport in heat pipes and vapor chambers is developed. The Navier–Stokes equations along with the energy equation are solved numerically for the liquid and vapor flows. A porous medium formulation is used for the wick region. Evaporation and condensation at the liquid–vapor interface are modeled using kinetic theory. The influence of the wick microstructure on evaporation and condensation mass fluxes at the liquid–vapor interface is accounted for by integrating a microstructure-level evaporation model (micromodel) with the device-level model (macromodel). Meniscus curvature at every location along the wick is calculated as a result of this coupling. The model accounts for the change in interfacial area in the wick pore, thin-film evaporation, and Marangoni convection effects during phase change at the liquid–vapor interface. The coupled model is used to predict the performance of a heat pipe with a screen-mesh wick, and the implications of the coupling employed

Analytical modeling of the startup characteristics of asymmetrical flat-plate and disk- shaped heat pipes

An analytical model is developed for the startup transient of asymmetrical flat-plate and diskshaped heat pipes. The model solves the proper transient heat conduction equations for the heat pipe wall and liquid-wick regions. A quasi-steady state, pseudo three-dimensional approximation is used for the vapor transi’ent behavior. The heat transfer within the wall and liquid-wick regions is coupled...

Advances in Fluid and Thermal Transport Property Analysis and Design of Sintered Porous Wick Microstructures

Sintered porous structures are ubiquitous as heat transport media for thermal management and other applications. In particular, low-porosity sintered packed beds are used as capillary-wicking and evaporation-enhancement structures in heat pipes. Accurate prediction and analysis of their transport characteristics for different microstructure geometries is important for improved design. Owing to ...

Analysis of cylindrical heat pipes incorporating the eects of liquid±vapor coupling and non-Darcian transportÐa closed form solution

This paper presents a two-dimensional analytical model for low-temperature cylindrical heat pipes. A closed-form solution which incorporates liquid±vapor interfacial hydrodynamic coupling and non-Darcian transport through the porous wick for the ®rst time, is obtained for predicting the vapor and liquid velocity and pressure distributions. In addition, the steady-state vapor and wall temperatur...

Evaluation of the thermal and hydraulic performances of a very thin sintered copper flat heat pipe for 3D microsystem packages

The reported research work presents numerical studies validated by experimental results of a flat micro heat pipe with sintered copper wick structure. The objectives of this research were to produce and demonstrate the efficiency of the passive cooling technology (heat pipe) integrated in a very thin electronic substrate that is a part of a multifunctional 3-D electronic package. The enhanced t...
